history

The castle was probably built in the 13th century by the "Lords of Salmendingen" as ancestral castle, first mentioned in 1245. Except in Salmendingen, the family at Erpfingen had goods and rights. The castle Hohenerpfingen was in their possession.

After his marriage to "Agate von Salmendingen", "Burkhard Schilling von Mansberg " (Niederadel, Ministeriale from Dettingen unter Teck) became the owner of Salmendingen Castle in 1350. Alliances between the Dukes of Teck and the House of Habsburg and the Counts of Hohenberg repeatedly led to conflicts with the Counts of the House of Württemberg for the Lords of Mansberg . At that time, Württemberg's Eberhard II directed his policy strongly against the imperial cities that stood in the way of a further expansion of Württemberg . There were numerous costly battles and costly battles in the region. Salmendingen Castle also had to be abandoned after being destroyed in the 14th century and was left to decay from 1386.

The Württembergians won the war. The former Salmendingen territory ( Ringingen , Salmendingen, Melchingen and Erpfingen) was added to the Fürstenberg dynasty and placed under the administration of the Werdenberg family (Ministeriale Jehle zu Trochtelfingen). At the nearby Dreifürstenstein , the territories of the houses of Hohenzollern, Württemberg and Salmendingen originally bordered one another. As was customary at the time, the Mansbergers and their families had to act as servants or administrators of the victorious Counts of Württemberg after the end of the war. In 1394 the children of the married couple "Agate von Salmendingen" and "Burkhard von Mansberg " waived all their claims on the castle and village of Salmendingen in favor of Klaus and Wilhelm Ungelter.

In 1401 King Ruprecht of the Palatinate gave Ruprecht I (Palatinate) the "Burgstall" Salmendingen with accessories to Count Eberhard von Werdenberg . The castle goes to the Counts of Fürstenberg in 1534 and in 1806 the ruins are owned by the Principality of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen .
