The New Castle

The New Castle in Hechingen in the Zollernalb district ( Baden-Württemberg ) served as the city residence of the Princes of Hohenzollern-Hechingen and was built in 1818 and 1819 under Prince Friedrich Hermann Otto .

Building history

The back of the Burnitz building with modern extensions

The previous building came from the Renaissance and was built under Count Eitel Friedrich IV . This first large city palace was built at the end of the 16th century. Except for a few remains, it had to give way to today's building at the beginning of the 19th century. The construction work was financed by reparation payments from France after the Congress of Vienna .

The New Palace is one of the main classical works in Hechingen and was built by Rudolf Burnitz from 1818 to 1819 as a three-wing complex. Burnitz was a student of Friedrich Weinbrenner , who was considered a leading architect of classicism in the Grand Duchy of Baden . Burnitz used parts of the previous building for the New Palace. Because the money ran out in the indebted principality, the castle remained unfinished. It was never actually inhabited by the princely family.

Today the building is used by the Sparkasse Zollernalb .

layout

The plant has three wings. The medium risk is overgated and significantly higher than the side risk . Ionic pilasters decorate the building. The interior work was not completed.

The top floor was to have another floor, which was not due to the lack of money. Later, Prince Constantine set up a provisional concert hall behind the facade.
