The Haigerloch Castle is located in Haigerloch in Zollernalbkreis in Baden-Wuerttemberg .

The original castle complex was first mentioned in 1095 and was probably located at the site of today's so-called Roman tower . The castle belonged to the Counts of Wiesneck and came into the possession of the Counts of Hohenberg in the second half of the 12th century . They built a new, additional castle complex on the site of today's castle. In 1381, the entire county including Haigerloch came to the Habsburgs . In 1497 it was exchanged for the rule of Rhäzün in Switzerland to Count Eitel Friedrich II. Von Zollern .

After Zoller inheritance in 1576, Haigerloch became the independent seat of a newly founded line of the Counts of Hohenzollern-Haigerloch . The new Count Christoph von Hohenzollern-Haigerloch had the castle expanded into today's extensive Renaissance castle . The current shape comes from the builder Michael Beer . The castle church was also designated as the burial place of his family branch, but it went out again in 1634. In 1700 the new building of the castle was added. In 1745, Prince Joseph Friedrich von Hohenzollern temporarily moved his residence from Vienna to the palace and took care of further construction work. In 1748 he had the castle church baroque, at great expense. The high altar, which was consecrated in 1609, is considered the most important work of Renaissance sculpture in Hohenzollern and has over 60 wooden sculptures.

In the 19th and 20th centuries the castle lost its importance, so that it was largely spared from war damage. Shortly before the end of the Second World War, an experiment on nuclear fission was carried out in the rock below the castle church . Today the Atomkeller Museum is located there . The last time the castle housed an agricultural and administrative school was in 1975, then an entrepreneur bought it. Since then, a hotel with a restaurant and a culture and congress center have been operated in the castle. The former castle church is now the parish church of Haigerloch St. Trinitatis.
