The company was founded on October 26, 1954 by Governor Bento Munhoz da Rocha Neto .

Generation and transmission of electrical energy

The company produces and supplies energy for customers in Brazil. Currently (as of June 2012) Copel has an installed capacity of 4,552 MW, produced by 17 highly automated, remote-controlled hydropower plants and a coal-fired power plant . On the Rio Teles Pires in the north of the state of Mato Grosso , the Colíder hydropower plant with a capacity of 300 MW has been under construction since 2011 and is scheduled to go into operation in early 2015.

Copel's power grid in the state of Parana includes 1,822 km of high-voltage lines and 30 substations.
