The Teles Pires , also called Rio São Manoel or Rio São Manuel , is a 1430 km long river in Brazil . The Teles Pires, together with the left, only slightly larger source river, the Rio Juruena, forms the Rio Tapajós and thus belongs to the catchment area of the Amazon .

It flows through the state of Mato Grosso , with its lower course up to the confluence with the Rio Juruena forming the border between the states of Mato Grosso and Pará .

The Teles Pires forms many rapids and waterfalls (Cachoeira Villeroy, 40 m), which made the river area difficult to access in the past. Several hydroelectric power plants with reservoirs have now been built, including the Teles Pires power plant .
