The Rio Juruena [ˌχiu ˌʒuɾuˈɛna] is a 1240 km long river in Brazil in the catchment area of the Amazon . It is a source river of the Rio Tapajós , which arises at the confluence with the Teles Pires .
River course
The Rio Juruena rises north of Pontes e Lucerda , just 30 km from the source of the Rio Guaporé . There are many large waterfalls in the upper reaches. It meanders to the north and becomes a large river through several tributaries. It is not navigable because of the numerous waterfalls and rapids. For the last 190 km before the estuary, it forms the border between the Brazilian states of Mato Grosso and Amazonas. Since June 5, 2006, the Juruena National Park has existed on the lower reaches of the two states .
