The Governador Carlos Wilson Airport ( IATA code : FEN , ICAO code : SBFN , Portuguese Aeroporto de Fernando de Noronha ) is the airport of the Fernando de Noronha archipelago , which belongs to Brazil and is located between 360 and 545 kilometers from the Brazilian coast Atlantic lies. This makes it the most eastern airport in Brazil.

history

Fernando de Noronha is the largest island in the archipelago that bears the same name. The first runway was built in 1934 and expanded by the United States Army Air Forces in 1942 . The first passenger terminal also dates from this time. At that time, flights were carried out between Dakar ( French West Africa , today Senegal ) and Recife , technical stops could now be made on Fernando de Noronha.

From 1944 flight operations were carried out under the responsibility of the United States Navy . With the end of World War II , the US armed forces handed the airport over to the Brazilian government.

In 1975 the runway was enlarged one more time, so that aircraft up to the size of a Boeing 737 could subsequently be handled. In 1999 the new passenger terminal, which is still in use today, was put into operation.

After Air France flight 447 disappeared on June 1, 2009, the airport was used as the base for the search. The crash site was about 550 kilometers northeast of Fernando de Noronha.

Airport facilities and approach procedures

Currently, the only runway with an orientation of 116 ° / 296 ° has a length of 1845 meters that can be used for take-offs and landings in both directions. A rotating radio beacon with a distance measuring device (VOR / DME) is available at the airport , which transmits on the frequency 113.4 MHz with the identifier FNR . A VOR approach ( runway 12) and two RNAV approach processes (runways 12 and 30) are available as instrument approach procedures .

Flight connections

The Brazilian airlines Gol Linhas Aéreas and Azul Linhas Aéreas offer flights to Recife and Natal . There are currently no international connections to and from Fernando de Noronha.

Incidents

  • On December 14, 1987, a Lockheed C-130H Hercules of the Brazilian Air Force with the aircraft registration FAB-2468 had an accident shortly before landing. The machine had started in Recife and had 29 people on board, none of whom survived the crash.
  • On September 20, 1990, an Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante with the registration number PT-FAW of the government of Pernambuco (Fernando de Noronha belongs administratively to this state) fell into the sea shortly after taking off towards Recife. All 12 people on board were killed. The accident investigation revealed that both pilots had very little flying experience on this type, had not flown at all for 141 and 133 days respectively, and had also not or incompletely processed the checklists before take-off.
