St-Vincent (Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard)
The Catholic parish church of Saint-Vincent in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard , a parish in the Vendée department in the French region of Pays de la Loire , was built in the Romanesque style in the 11th and 12th centuries . The church is dedicated to Saint Vincent . Relics of the saint are said to have been brought to Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard in the early Middle Ages and kept in a chapel that was believed to have burned down during the Norman invasions in the 9th century.
history
As early as the 6th century, Gregory of Tours mentions a church in Saint-Vincent-sur-Jard. Today's church was built in three phases. The nave was built in the 11th century, the choir in the 12th century and the bell tower at the end of the 12th century. It is believed that the church was set on fire in the 16th century during the Huguenot Wars . In the 17th century the church was restored and equipped with new altars.
architecture
The exterior of the massive bell tower resembles a fortified tower. Inside the tower has a ribbed vault . During the exterior renovation of the church in the 1990s, the two large window openings on the north and west sides of the tower were exposed again.
The nave is a simple, single-nave room. It is covered by a wooden ceiling and divided by a buttress arch . A pointed arch opens the nave to the recently closed choir, which is vaulted by a pointed barrel. The choir is illuminated by two side windows and one large window in the front wall. In the south wall of the choir, two pointed arches, elaborately decorated arcades are cut into which piscines are built.
Furnishing
- The church has altarpieces from the 17th century.
- There is a grave under the bell tower. An inscription is carved on the stone slab stating that a member of the parish council is buried here, who died in 1731 at the age of 37.
