Araraquara , officially Portuguese Município de Araraquara , is a large city in Brazil. It is located in the center of the state of São Paulo and is about 270 km northwest of the capital São Paulo . According to the official estimate as of July 1, 2016, around 229,000 inhabitants live in an area of 1,003.625 km². The name of the city means in the native language: "House of the Sun".
history
The place was initially a parish Freguesia de São Bento de Araraquara , which was founded on August 22, 1817 and was subordinate to Piracicaba . On February 6, 1889, the place was spun off and raised to a self-governing Munizip. In the 19th century, the entire area was heavily agricultural. Sugar cane , grain, cotton and, from the middle of the 19th century, coffee - today mainly sugar cane - were grown on the large agricultural properties characteristic of this period .
With the increasing importance of rail transport (establishment of the company's own company Ferrovia EFA = Estrada de Ferro Araraquara ), the repair and maintenance of vehicles also became important, and a railway depot was built on site .
Administration, politics
City prefect (executive) has been Edinho da Silva of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT), who was mayor of the city from 2001 to 2008 , since the local elections in 2016 for the 2017-2020 term . The legislature lies with the city council, the Câmara Municipal, which consists of 18 city councils (vereadores). Jéferson Yashuda of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) is president for the 2017 to 2018 term of office .
Economy and education
The city is the seat of several departments of the Universidade Estadual Paulista "Júlio de Mesquita Filho" (UNESP) - the state university of São Paulo , which is spread over the state for 40,000 students with 33 institutes at 23 locations (2008) - as well as other private universities.
The Cutrale company , the world's largest manufacturer of orange juice concentrate , which has its headquarters in Araraquara, is economically important . Another economically important factor is Lupo , a large underwear manufacturer in Brazil with its own outlet store .
The exhibition halls ( Centro de Exposições e Eventos de Araraquara e Região ) to the east of the large football stadium are also of national importance.

Infrastructure and traffic
Araraquara has an international airport in the southeast ( Bartholomeu de Gusmão , IATA airport code : AQA) with a 1,800 meter long asphalt runway. The (iron) train station (Ferroviário Estação de Araraquara ) is located in the eastern part of the city center, as well as a railway depot with a historic locomotive round shed to the north and the bus station ( Rodoviário de Araraquara ) on the southern edge , near the intersection of the SP-310 and SP-255 as well as the federal high-speed roads further east is the western terminus of the SP-257.
Local public transport is handled by trolleybuses ( CTA-Trólebus ) and Paraty with the central hub Terminal de Integração .
Several hospitals and clinics ensure the city's health care.
Culture
In addition to several churches (e.g. Igreja Matriz de São Bento , Igreja Nossa Senhora das Graças and Igreja Santa Cruz ), spread over the whole city, there is a theater arena Prefeito Benedito de Oliveira , located on the southeast , in addition to the municipal theater in the north Suburban. A historical museum, a city archive as well as two public libraries ( Mário de Andrade and Monteiro Lobato ) and a cultural center are also part of the cityscape.
For recreation and leisure, there are numerous public gardens, parks and playgrounds in the core area and on the outskirts.
Sports
Home of the popular football club Associação Ferroviária de Esportes (AFE) - nickname: locomotive (and also mascot ) - founded by railway workers on April 12, 1950 and since 1951 owned its own stadium ( Estádio Fonte Luminosa ) for 18,453 spectators, including a competition swimming pool . Not far from it in the northwest is the Gigontão sports hall .
