The Sicilian immigrant Giuseppe Cutrale began selling oranges as a weekly market trader in São Paulo . After the end of the Second World War, he tried to participate as a trader in Brazilian fruit exports to Europe. His son José Cutrale (1926-2004) founded the company Cutrale in 1968, which grew from its small beginnings to one of the world's largest manufacturers of orange juice concentrate, with five juice factories in Brazil. Some of the fruits are harvested on our own orange plantations. Since 1996 the company has also been manufacturing in two factories in Florida , USA . About 25 percent of the world's orange juice concentrate is produced by the Cutrale group of companies. Many of the orange juices sold in Germany and around 90 percent of the oranges grown in Brazil are processed by Cutrale and its two competitors Citrosuco and Louis Dreyfus Commodities .

The factories work at least nine months a year. Although different types of oranges ripen in the course of the harvest months, the engineers manage to produce a consistent taste quality. The individual Cutrale orange juice factory had an hourly processing capacity of 200,000 liters of orange juice from 670 tons of fruit at the turn of the millennium. The juice concentrate is shipped to North America and Europe using the company's own orange juice tankers of the Orange Blossom type, which went into service in 1985 . In addition to fresh oranges , lemons and mandarins from our own production are also exported, some of which are marketed to end consumers under the own brands Cutrale and Don José .

Currently (2014) José Louis Cutrale (* 1946) runs the company, which employs 10,000 people. While the demand for orange juice concentrate fell slightly in the most important purchasing countries due to changes in drinking habits, Cutrale diversified and has since then also been trading in apples , peaches and soy .

In 2014, Cutrale and Joseph Safras Safra Group took over Chiquita Brands International for 1.3 billion US dollars after a bidding battle against the Irish fruit trading company Fyffes .
