Américo Brasiliense , officially Portuguese Município de Américo Brasiliense , is a small town in the interior of the Brazilian state of São Paulo . It is around 280 km from the capital São Paulo , and forms a conurbation with the city of Araraquara . The population was estimated at 40,504 residents on July 1, 2019, who are called American -Brazilian or American for short . The area is 122.785 km² (2017), which is mainly used agriculturally for sugar cane cultivation.
history
The city and administrative district are named after the politician of the Brazilian Empire Américo Brasiliense de Almeida Melo (1833-1896), later governor of the province of São Paulo and first president of the new state of São Paulo in the transition period. In 1878 the Distrito de Américo Brasiliense was first founded, this was one of the districts of the city of Araraquara . By law no. 8092 of February 28, 1964, the establishment as a self-governing city was decided, separated from Araraquara and effective on May 21, 1965, after the necessary elections for mayor and city councilors. The city festival is celebrated on May 21st. The area at that time was still 132.8 km².
geography
The municipality is located at an altitude of 715 meters above sea level. Hydrographically, the area belongs to the drainage basin of the Rio Mogi ( Bacia Hidrografica do Rio Mogi-Guaçú ).

- in the north Santa Lúcia ;
- in the east São Carlos ;
- and in the south-west directly passing Araraquara .

Administration, politics
City prefect (executive) has been Dirceu Bras Pano of the Partido da Social Democracia Brasileira (PSDB) since the local elections in 2016 for the term 2017 to 2020 . The legislature lies with the city council, the Câmara Municipal, which consists of 13 city councils ( vereadores ). Divaldo de Camargo Pereira of the Partido Social Democrático (PSD) is president for the 2017-2020 term .
The Catholics of the three parishes Paróquia de São Judas Tadeu (founded in 2014), Paróquia de Nossa Senhora Aparecida and Paróquia São Francisco de Assis belong to the diocese of São Carlos .

economy
The city is also called Cidade Doçura (City of Sweetness) because of the surrounding sugar cane fields . The sugar industry is the city's main livelihood.
Further to the west in Gavião Paixoto is an Embraer factory . This is where the Embraer KC-390 military tactical medium transport aircraft is built.
education
In 1991 the illiteracy rate was 20.3%, which had already fallen to 8.8% in the 2010 census.
