Jacob Rosanes

Jacob Rosanes (also: Jakob Rosanes ; born August 16, 1842 in Brody , Galicia , †  January 6, 1922 in Breslau ) was a German mathematician and chess master . As a university lecturer in Breslau, he dealt with invariant theory and algebraic geometry .

Born into a Sephardic family, Rosanes attended the (German-speaking) grammar school in Brody. In the spirit of his father, he learned from 1856 to 1858 in a trading house in Breslau. After two years of preparation for studying at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Breslau , he studied chemistry from 1860 . Under the influence of Heinrich Schröter , he turned to mathematics and physics . His teachers included Rudolf Lipschitz , Paul Bachmann , Oskar Emil Meyer and Ferdinand Joachimsthal (1818–1861). His consemester Moritz Pasch became a close friend. With a dissertation on Heinrich Schroeter doctorate he in 1865 to Dr. phil.

Then temporarily at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Berlin , he completed his habilitation in 1870 in Breslau. In 1873 he received an associate's post and in 1876 the chair of mathematics. In the same year he married Emilie Rawitscher . Since 1897 go. Councilor , he was elected rector for the 1903/04 academic year . In his “inspiring” Rector's speech on October 15, 1903, he dealt with the development of mathematics in the 19th century. Didactically rather untalented, he later had famous doctoral students such as Ernst Steinitz and Otto Toeplitz . In 1911 he retired .

As a passionate chess player , he defeated Adolf Anderssen in 1862 . He wrote the excellent book Theory and Practice of the Game of Chess .
