The Estádio do Canindé under construction

The Estádio do Canindé is a football stadium in the Brazilian city of São Paulo . It has space for 21,004 spectators and is the home of the Associação Portuguesa de Desportos association .

history

The Estádio do Canindé in São Paulo , the largest city in Brazil with a good ten million inhabitants and also home to a large number of large stadiums, was built between 1953 and 1956 and opened on November 11 of the same year. For the first game in the new stadium, the future user association of the sports facility, the Associação Portuguesa de Desportos football club , and a selection made up of the two top municipal clubs, São Paulo FC and Palmeiras São Paulo, met. The game ended in a 3-2 win for Portuguesa. Since that day, Portuguesa São Paulo has played its home games at the Estádio do Canindé. The club is a member of Clube dos 13 and is one of the thirteen football clubs with the longest tradition in all of Brazil. Compared to other teams of this association, however, the success list of Portuguesa São Paulo is rather small. The club achieved its greatest success with the Brazilian runner-up in 1996. It also won the São Paulo state championship three times . Portuguesa São Paulo is currently playing in the first-class Série A , after winning the championship of Série B in the past season (2011) to make the return to the top Brazilian league in football perfect.

The Estádio do Canindé can now accommodate 21,004 spectators. Even in earlier days, the capacity was never that much higher. The record setting in the stadium was set up when local rivals Corinthians São Paulo made a guest appearance at Portuguesa on October 10, 1982 and 25,622 onlookers visited the Estádio do Canindé. Officially, the stadium is called Estádio Doutor Osvaldo Teixeira Duarte . The reason for this name is a former president of Portuguesa São Paulo, Osvaldo Teixeira Duarte, who headed the club at the time of the stadium construction. It is currently the third largest stadium in São Paulo after the Estádio do Morumbi , which has space for around 67,000 people, and the Estádio do Pacaembu , which holds just over 40,000 spectators. It should be noted, however, that two other large stadium projects are currently under construction in São Paulo. Both the new Itaquera Arena by Corinthians, which can hold between 40,000 and 60,000 people , and the new Estádio Palestra Itália will have more spectator seats than the Estádio do Canindé.
