Ceilândia is the administrative region IX, officially Portuguese Região Administrativa de Ceilândia , in the Brazilian federal district . It is located about 26 km west of the center of Brasília . Ceilândia was conceived as a satellite city for Brasília in the 1970s in order to prevent invasive immigrants from other regions around Brasilia from building favelas , that is, illegal settlements with no claim to land. The root of the name "Cei" in the name of Ceilândia stands for 'CEI' (Portuguese Campanha de Erradicação de Invasões , German center for the elimination of illegal settlements ). A large part of the population comes from the northeast of Brazil. Ceilândia had 398,374 inhabitants at the last census in 2010. The region has numerous markets such as Feira Central .

With Sol Nascente , Ceilândia is also the second largest favela in Brazil after Rocinha . The crime rate in Ceilândia is high. The region is also home to a faculty of the Universidade de Brasília with courses in health care.

The city's hallmarks are the water tower, which can even be seen on the flag, and the Casa do Cantador , designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer , where singers from the northeast perform shows.

Ceilândia is home to the football club Ceilândia EC , which became champions of the federal district in 2010 . Local rivals are the Sociedade Atlético Ceilandense .

Ceilândia is connected to the city center by the following metro stations: Ceilândia Sul, Guariroba, Ceilândia Centro, Ceilândia Norte and Ceilândia.

Local politics

Since January 1, 2019, the Chief of the Civil Police ( Delegado de Polícia Civil ) and District Representative Fernando Batista Fernandes has been appointed regional administrator. Fernando Fernandes is a member of the Partido Republicano da Ordem Social (PROS).
