Cleistocactus tupizensis is a species of plant in the genus Cleistocactus from the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet tupizensis means 'from the location near Tupiza (Bolivia)'.

description

Cleistocactus tupizensis grows bushy with upright shoots branching at the base and reaches heights of up to 1.5 meters with diameters of up to 6 centimeters. There are 14 to 24 low ribs . The areoles on it are large. The two reddish brown to whitish central spines are up to 4.5 centimeters long. The unequal 15 to 20 radial spines are glassy white, brittle and crowded.

The slightly curved, wine-red to whitish flowers are slightly crooked at their mouth. They are up to 8 inches long.

Distribution and systematics

Cleistocactus tupizensis is distributed in the Bolivian departments of Chuquisaca , Potosí and Tarija at altitudes of 2500 to 3000 meters. It was first described as Cereus tupizensis in 1916 by Friedrich Karl Johann Vaupel . Curt Backeberg placed them in the genus Cleistocactus in 1936 .
