Itabirito , officially Município de Itabirito , is a city in the state of Minas Gerais , Brazil . It is located approx. 320 km north of Rio de Janeiro and 57 km south of the capital Belo Horizonte in the Serra de Itabirito region . It is affected by the BR-356 federal highway .

According to the 2010 census, the middle town has 45,449 inhabitants, who are called Itabiritenser. According to the IBGE's estimate of July 1, 2019, the population was calculated to grow to 51,875 residents. The area is 542.609 km²; the population density in 2010 was 84 people per km².

Geography, geology

About 10 kilometers west of the city is the 1,586 m high mountain Pico de Itabirito , which consists entirely of iron ore, mainly hematite , and because of its color is regionally known as "pedra sangue" (blood stone). It has a striking truncated cone shape. The long-term iron ore mining in the area of Itabirito is known worldwide because of its large deposits from the Precambrian ( Minas Supergroup , Cauê Formation). The wider region is therefore also called the Iron Square ( Portuguese Quadrilátero Ferrífero ) because it is bordered by four cities.

An open-cast mine extends up to the striking rock massif of Pico de Itabirito. The Instituto do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico Nacional declared the mountain a National Natural Monument in 1926, the status of which was maintained until 1965. The protection area was withdrawn because of the expanding mining area. In order to preserve it, the core area of the mountain was again placed under protection in 1991, this time by means of a statutory ordinance at the municipal level.

The German geologist Wilhelm Ludwig von Eschwege visited this iron ore deposit in Brazil between 1810 and 1821 during his exploration work and noted the rock found as itabirite in his work Geognostic Painting of Brazil and Probable Mother Rock of the Diamonds , published in 1822 .

history

The settlement history begins at the end of the 17th century after the first gold discoveries. In 1709 the first permanent settlements were built in the region around the Pico de Itaubyra, today the Pico de Itabirito. The increase in population led to the establishment of the Freguesia Itabira do Campo in 1745 . The area kept this name until city rights were granted on September 7, 1923 and the place was renamed Itabirito , a word from the Tupí-Guaraní languages .

City administration

After the municipal elections in Brazil in 2016, the re-elected Alexander Silva Salvador de Oliveira is the city prefect (executive) for the term of office 2017 to 2020, the legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council or the city council.
