Toponymy

The place is named after the director of the Central Railway of Brazil ( Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil ), who later worked in Minas Gerais in 1894 , later Minister of War and Marshal Vespasiano Gonçalves de Albuquerque e Silva (1852-1924). There is a public bust of him in Vespasiano.

history

The first residents arrived in the area of today's Vespasiano around 1738, at which time a military company had been stationed there. A few years later, in 1745, miners settled here to mine mineral resources. Fazendeira Mariana Joaquina da Costa is considered to be the founder of the city ; her Fazenda do Capão was in the core area. When the new capital of the state of Minas Gerais was built from 1897, the inauguration of the Estrada de Ferro Central do Brasil played an important factor in the development of Vespasiano's economy and population. Food and limestone products were needed, which resulted in further internal migration from the eastern areas with the expansion of agriculture and industrial settlements. The development followed the course of the Ribeirão da Mata and the railway. In 1894 the settlement was named Vespasiano ( Vila de Vespasiano ).

On December 18, 1915, the Vespasiano District ( Distrito de Vespasiano ) was formed and initially belonged to the Munizip Santa Luzia do Rio das Velhas , later Santa Luzia , but became independent on December 27, 1948 and spun off from Santa Luzia.

This place had only 5610 inhabitants in 1950, of which 1944 in urban and 3666 in rural areas on an area of around 121 km². From 1979 to 1992 the municipality consisted of the two districts Distrito de Vespasiano (seat) and the Distrito de São José da Lapa , which became the independent city of São José da Lapa .

Vespasiano has been part of the geostatistical Região geográfica imediata Belo Horizonte and the Região geográfica intermediária Belo Horizonte since 2017 .
