Nepomuceno , officially Município de Nepomuceno , is a medium-sized town in the state of Minas Gerais in Brazil . It is located 233 km from the capital Belo Horizonte .
General Information
According to the 2010 census, the community had 25,733 inhabitants, who are called Nepomucenese. It is 131st of the 853 places in Minas Gerais according to population. According to the IBGE's estimate of July 1, 2019, the population was calculated to grow to 26,769 residents. The area is 582,553 km²; the population density is 44.2 people per km².
The information on the altitude fluctuates between 840 and 1100 m, as the place is very hilly. The center is generally given as 843 m, 20% of the area is flat, 50% hilly and 30% as mountainous.
history
The settlement of the area began at the beginning of the 18th century, Sesmaria was owned by the Capitão Mateus Luiz Garcia. He built a small chapel dedicated to Saint Nepomucus , from which the first name of the hamlet Vila de São João Nepomuceno was derived. A first mass and baptism took place on March 6, 1776. The development of coffee plantations led to an increase in the rural population, so that at the time of the Brazilian Empire on September 11, 1831, the area became a Distrito de Paz , the jurisdiction was thus subject to a justice of the peace, through the law Lei nº 209 of April 7, 1841 the freguesia of the same name was built.
The municipality received its town charter under the name Nepomuceno on August 30, 1911. Since then, the founding of the town has been celebrated every August 30 of each year.
City administration
After the local elections in 2012, the re-elected mayor Marcos Memento (* 1972) of the Partido dos Trabalhadores (PT) was city prefect (executive) for the 2013 to 2016 term of office . In the 2016 local elections , he was replaced by Luiza Maria Lima Menezes, known as Iza Menezes, for the 2017-2020 term.
The legislature lies with the Câmara Municipal, the city council, which was established on July 1, 1912.
economy
The most important line of business is the cultivation and trading of coffee , which makes up 70 percent of economic activity. Cereals, rice and pulses are also grown. Poultry farming is not insignificant. There are over 1000 farms with almost 5000 employees.

The BR-381 federal road connects Nepomuceno with the states of São Paulo and Espírito Santo .
education
In 2006, a campus of the Centro Federal de Educação Tecnológica de Minas Gerais was built in the city with state funds .
