The special exhibition “Nero - Emperor, Artist and Tyrant” in 2016 was one of the most successful exhibitions in Europe. From May 14th to October 16th, the city of Trier was the focus of cultural travelers and was able to consolidate its reputation as the “center of antiquity” in the year of its 30th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The show in three museums on 2,000 square meters with 774 exhibits presented the personality of Nero for the first time in Central Europe. The General Directorate for Cultural Heritage of Rhineland-Palatinate with the Rhineland State Museum presented “Nero - Emperor, Artist and Tyrant”, the museum at the cathedral “Nero and the Christians ”, the Simeonstift city museum “ Lust and Crime. The Nero Myth in Art ”.

272,000 visitors, 3,200 cultural tour groups and a large press coverage from national and international media were the result and underlined the special position of Rhineland-Palatinate as a European cultural travel region.

The project evaluation showed that the region could profit economically from the exhibition. The figures from a visitor survey show that 69.5% of the visitors came to Trier only because of the Nero show. The guests who would not have visited Trier without the project spent an average of 91 euros a day. In total, a value of around 19 million can be calculated that was carried into the city. The organizers of the exhibition were the General Directorate for Cultural Heritage Rhineland-Palatinate , the City of Trier and the Diocese of Trier .
