Olivier Tébily (born December 19, 1975 in Abidjan ) is a former Ivorian football player . He played as a defender for Toronto FC in Major League Soccer . He is also a French citizen but played for the Ivory Coast national team. He is the cousin of former Ivorian national team captain Didier Drogba .

Career

Club career

Although born in Abidjan (Ivory Coast), Tébily grew up in France and was a big Arsenal fan as a child .

He started his career in French Ligue 2 with Niort, where he played for several years. In January 1998 he moved to LB Châteauroux , where he played in Ligue 1. After the relegation of Châteauroux, he moved to Sheffield United in England in 1999 for the transfer of £ 200,000 .

His career at Sheffield was short. His seventh game for the club was spotted by Kenny Dalglish , who was then Sporting Director at Celtic Glasgow . Dalglish then committed Tébily for 1.25 million euros.

In three years he was on the pitch 38 times for the Scots. In 2002 he moved back to England to Birmingham City , because he was no longer used at Celtic.

At first he was a regular at his new club, but was thrown back due to injuries. At the end of 2007, when the competition within the club was too strong, he dissolved his contract.

Since April 24, 2008 he played for the Canadian representative Toronto FC in Major League Soccer. He played four games for the Canadians before injuring his ankle. On July 31, 2008, he was released from the club because he wanted to be closer to his family in France.

National team

Despite his French citizenship , Tébily decided to play for his native Ivory Coast . From 1999 to 2004 he played 18 international matches, but has not been part of the national team since 2004 .
