Wilhelm is a male given name and a family name .

Origin and meaning

The name comes from the Altniederdeutschen and Old High German and can be of willio ( will , determination) and helmet ( helmet , protection) or halogen ( Halm derive upright). His first better-known name bearer was Saint Wilhelm (Willehalm) of Aquitaine (745-812), cousin of Emperor Charlemagne and founder of the Gellone Abbey, today Saint-Guilhem-le-Désert . Its spread in north-western Europe was mainly promoted by the namesake in the families of the Orange and Hohenzollerns .
