Ernst Wilhelm Müller-Schönefeld (born February 20, 1867 in Schönefeld , † 1944 in Malchin ) was a German painter , lithographer and craftsman .

Life

As the son of a lithographer, Müller-Schönefeld was initially trained in this subject by his father. He then studied in Leipzig and at the Academy in Berlin with Hugo Vogel and Anton von Werner . In 1893 he received the Adolf Ginsberg Foundation Prize and in 1895 the Great State Prize of the Prussian Academy of the Arts (Rome Prize) was awarded to him. These prizes enabled him to travel to Italy for two years, including a stay at the Villa Strohl-Fern in Rome in 1897.

When he returned to Germany, he settled in Berlin-Charlottenburg, where, as a freelance painter, he mainly made historical pictures and portraits. He also worked as a book illustrator and artist , creating decorative strips and initials . In addition, he maintained a painting school for “portrait and costume, daily nude and evening sketching nude”, as can be seen from advertisements in the catalogs of the major Berlin art exhibitions .

Wilhelm Müller-Schönefeld was married to Johanna, born in 1908. Sellschopp. The marriage resulted in the sons Wolfgang (1909–1981), a lawyer and district judge, and Claus-Joachim (1910–1991), who also became a painter.
