Officially accepted: 1993

The flag of the Western European Union consisted of a dark blue background on which ten yellow pentagonal stars were arranged in an upwardly open semicircle. It contained the organization's abbreviation in English "WEU" and French "UEO", arranged in the middle. Although this was the flag of a military organization, it was rarely used in military situations.

description

The flag was in dark blue with an upwardly open semicircle of ten pentagonal yellow stars with the white letters WEU horizontally and UEO vertically above the center and the common use of the letter E.

The blue of the flag and the yellow stars were borrowed from the European flag , but the number of stars corresponded to the number of member states of the WEU.

use

The flag was rarely used as the organization's work largely ceased before its activities were taken over by the European Union's Common Security and Defense Policy . She was once used aboard an operating United States Navy warship , the USS John Rodgers , which served as the flagship of an Italian general (with a WEU crew) to coordinate relief operations in Bosnia-Herzegovina . There were variants of the flag that were used at meetings and other official occasions. The WEU contract was terminated, so that the work of the organization was completed until June 2011 and no further use of the flag is foreseeable.

Previous drafts

The last version of the flag was in use from 1993 to 2011. Before that there was a nine-star flag that was used until Greece joined . Then the stars were progressively larger towards the base than those at the edge. This design replaced an older version that had been used since the WEU was founded. This flag was also dark blue, but instead of the stars there was an unbroken chain in the shape of an inverted pentagon that formed five connections. There was a multi-colored border (red on the outside, gold, black and white on the inside), which was taken over from the flag colors of the WEU member states at the time.
