Wolfgang Wilhelm (screenwriter)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wolfgang Wilhelm (born November 28, 1906 in Stettin , Germany , † January 1984 in Shepway , Kent , United Kingdom ) was a German screenwriter for German and British film.

Life

The son of the actor and director Carl Wilhelm made contact with the industry through his father and his brother Hans Wilhelm, who had been a screenwriter in German film since the days of silent films . There he began to write screenplays with the beginning of the sound film, preferably for comedies and romances. He wrote his first two works as a partner of Eugen Thiele , who also directed the comedy Susanne Makes Order and the sex education film dangers of love . In 1933, the Jew Wilhelm had to flee Germany from the Nazis.

When he arrived in London, he was soon able to find work in British film, mostly in collaboration with other authors. Occasionally, as in Farewell Again (1937) or the Hollywood production Ein Mann mit Phantasie ( A Dispatch From Reuters , USA 1940), he had to be content with the role of a story supplier. Wolfgang Wilhelm mainly provided adventure and historical stories, and during the Second World War he also wrote manuscripts on anti-Nazi material. In 1948, the Dutch veteran director Jaap Speyer brought Wilhelm to his home country for the script for his last production, A Kingdom for a House . In the 1950s Wilhelm returned temporarily to Germany (Munich) and worked for ARD. Here, for example, Wilhelm produced the German version of the British television series The Good Old Days for Bayerischer Rundfunk in 1964 . Wolfgang Wilhelm spent his twilight years in the English seaside resort of Folkestone .
