Today it depends is a German feature film from 1933 by Kurt Gerron with Hans Albers and the later two-time Oscar winner Luise Rainer in the leading roles.

action

Hannes Eckmann is the leader of a Hamburg dance band and is very popular in his branch as well as with those who love to dance. When a conductor's competition is to take place in Berlin, he immediately sets off. During the trip to the capital of the Reich, Hannes met the young composer Peter Schlemm, who he liked very much. Schlemm has just created a dance song that Hannes really wants to make a hit with his combo (which he will later succeed in doing). When the two arrive in Berlin, Eckmann meets another person. The still very young lady is called Marita Costa and is the head of a ladies band with whom she appears in a large variety event. Marita likes Hannes, and when he learns that Marita has a problem because her tap dancer is sick, the bandmaster Hannes, who is also well-trained in this regard, jumps in for the dancer without confessing to Marita that he is her direct competitor as bandmaster here in Berlin is. Marita's combo guest performance is promptly a complete success thanks to Hannes' participation, and on top of that, the two competitors even seem to like each other.

This changes suddenly when Marita has to find out what her sweetheart Hannes actually does full-time: namely almost exactly the same as her. She sees Hannes as a competitor in the upcoming conductor's competition and assumes that his willingness to help can only be part of a devious plan. Maritas Impresario Basil, a rascal who doesn’t skip a bad trick, then wants to disembark Hannes with a small maneuver: He has the vehicle with Eckmann’s musical instruments “kidnapped”. But with that, Basil cuts himself into his own flesh, because his stupid henchmen caught the car with the instruments of Marita's band. She may no longer be able to take part in the competition. And again the famous Hannes Eckmann proves to be the savior in need. After all, he not only wins the heart of the charming competitor with the bobbed head, but both of them together also win the main prize of the competition event: the “golden saxophone”.

Production notes

Today it depends is the last film made by both Albers and the Jewish director Gerron before the Nazis came to power . It was made within a month, between December 15, 1932 and mid-January 1933. The film premiered on March 17, 1933 in the Gloria-Palast in Berlin.

Eugen Kürschner took over the production management. The film structures were created by Max Knaake , Julius von Borsody was artistic advisor. Kurt Hoffmann assisted director Gerron. Actress and singer Baby Gray made her screen debut here.

Like Gerron, numerous other artists involved in this film, including all four Jewish composers and songwriters as well as the big band Stefan Weintraubs , left Germany after this production and emigrated.

Music recordings

The Weintraubs Syncopators play and sing , the lyrics were written by Fritz Rotter and Peter Kuckuck. The musical arrangement was done by Helmut Wolfes. The following music tracks were played:

  • I am Hans in luck (music: Paul Mann and Stefan Weiß, text: Fritz Rotter)
  • Whenever I'm happy I have to cry terribly (music: Walter Jurmann and Bronislau Kaper, text: Fritz Rotter)
  • So much can happen in 24 hours (music: Walter Jurmann and Bronislau Kaper, text: Fritz Rotter)
  • My gorilla has a villa in the zoo (music: Walter Jurmann and Bronislau Kaper, text: Peter Kuckuck)

criticism

The Österreichische Film-Zeitung stated: “The amusing film is carried by the strong vitality of the main actor; Luise Rainer is an interesting actress; Oskar Karlweis as a helpless composer debutant is extremely personable (...) Kurt Gerron's colorful production and the beautiful music are also strong moments of success of the film. "
