Jaap Speyer
Jaap Speyer (born November 29, 1891 in Amsterdam ; † September 17, 1952 there ) was a Dutch film director .
Life
He studied art history in Amsterdam and made contact with the theater before the First World War. During the war, actors from Hamburg brought him into connection with the film. In 1917 he moved to Berlin , where he made his first film When women love and hate that same year .
Numerous strips of a more cheerful nature followed, but also some dramatic material that repeatedly dealt with the subject of girl trafficking . After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists, Speyer, classified by them as a " full Jew ", left the German Reich and returned to the Netherlands.
There he directed The Three Sailors, the first Dutch sound film, which was a great success. Before the occupation of his homeland by the German Wehrmacht in World War II, he fled to western New Guinea in what was then the Dutch East Indies . Before the Japanese he evaded to Australia , where he was entrusted as a film officer with the production of military training films in 1945/46.
Then he returned to his homeland. With A Kingdom for a House he made the first Dutch film to be shown in post-war Germany. He was married to the actress Mia Pankau (1891–1974), who appeared in many of his films.
