The Three Sailors is a 1933 Dutch film directed by Jaap Speyer . It was one of the first sound films in the country and is based on the piece De jantjes (1920) penned by Herman Bouber .

action

At the center of the story are the three sailors Dries, Toon and Manus, who is quite cross-eyed. After their military service in the Dutch East Indies , they return to the Jordaan district of Amsterdam, a typical working-class area where they once grew up as friends. But after the first ecstasy of being home again, the gray reality returns to her life. Because here, in the Jordaan, it is extremely difficult to find work. Not everything is going well with the three sailors privately either: Dries is with Greet, but the pub owner Piet, by everyone just called "Aunt" Piet, wants to separate the two absolutely so that their useless son Leendert is greet, who is not interested shows you can fish. So she spreads the rumor of Dries 'mother that Greet was not faithful in Dries' absence. This is of course a lie, but it gets caught up in the sailor, who then has a solid fight with Leendert. Piet has made it (for the time being): With her allegation, she has driven a wedge in Dries' relationship with Greet. In his disappointment, Dries undertook to spend another six years on the high seas and in the colonies ...

Toon, the idiot among the three sailors, has a mother who cares very much for him and is not exactly driven to look for work. But the father has no understanding for toons laisser-faire behavior and puts pressure on them. Toon, who has always been fond of alcohol, then begins to drink more. Like Dries, Manus also has a solid relationship problem: his girlfriend Jans has left him because she is better and wants to make more of her life. She believes that a relationship with the common sailor is only a hindrance. She orients herself upwards and looks around in the upper class to see if a well-off, wealthy husband could not be found there. Again as a sailor in the distance, there is a reconciliation between Dries and Greet. All misunderstandings have vanished and they tie the knot by radio marriage. The two men are also doing well in their careers: Dries and Manus are promoted to sergeants. Only for Toon, who is always called the "blue" toon because of his drunkenness, things keep getting worse. Finally, far from home in the Netherlands, he dies.

Production notes

The three sailors originated from September 1933 and was premiered on February 9, 1934. This made the film the second Dutch sound film after Willem van Oranje . The three sailors was a great critic as well as audience and box office success.

The film architect Hans Ledersteger , who is well employed in German and Austrian film, was brought to Holland to create the film structures . He stayed there for a number of other films until he returned to the Third Reich in 1935. The film budget for The Three Sailors was 100,000 guilders.

The same material was adapted as a silent film as early as 1922.
