Hotelratten is a German silent film thriller from 1927 by Jaap Speyer with Nils Asther in the leading role.

action

The noble Continental Hotel has been haunted for some time by a jewelry thief who has plundered many of the wealthy guests. Mr. and Mrs. Bellmann and their lovely daughter Ethel are also staying here at the moment. A mysterious hotel guest named Jenkins, about whom no one knows exactly, takes special care of the daughter. But she is not interested and gives the pushy recruiter for her favor a bitter rebuff. When Jenkins returns to his hotel room, he surprises a burglar. The American pulls out his revolver and the thief begs his mercy. Jenkins has an idea that he thinks is awesome. He wants to use the captured man for an elaborate plan of revenge on Ethel, who has let him down. Jenkins turns the man into a certain Prince Ladrone (Italian for "mugger").

For Jenkins, however, the next day things are completely different than planned: At first he is perplexed when "his" burglar perfectly dismounts as Prince Ladrone and then a close relative, Princess Ladrone, is greeted warmly as if he were being welcomed have known each other for ages. Then something happens that doesn't suit him even more: Ethel makes the wrong prince beautiful eyes and seems shocked in love. Lilian Bellmann, her stepmother, also seems to have more than one clear interest in the handsome young man. Things develop rapidly, and soon Father Bellmann feels compelled, in order not to be compromised, to announce his daughter's engagement to Prince Ladrone.

But now Jenkins believes he has reached his goal: Coram publico he accuses the prince of being the long-sought jewelry thief, whereupon the young man piles up head over heels. The hotel staff runs after him. During his escape, the false prince meets a small, trained monkey who has just stolen Mrs. Bellmann's jewelry and has not yet delivered the goods to its owner. Ladrone chases the animal in front of him until it jumps on Jenkins and takes protection from him. With this, Jenkins is exposed as the jewel thief, known in the industry as the "hotel rat". Finally everything dissolves: The "Prince" and the "Princess" are in truth employed by the criminal investigation department and have been after Jenkins for a long time. To convict him of the act, you had to play this charade. When Bellmann realizes this, he no longer has any objection to an actual engagement of his daughter to the guardian of the law.
