Karl Sommer (* 1955 / 1956 ) is an Austrian basketball official .

career

Sommer came to basketball by chance in 1991. As a spectator, he attended a game of the Fürstenfeld Panthers and decided to get involved financially with the club with business friends. Sommer became the chairman of the team and in November 2014 he was elected club president. "Since he started as a functionary in 1991, he has done everything from the bus driver to the canteen to the cashier", the " Kleine Zeitung " described his work in Fürstenfeld. On September 17, 2018, Sommer resigned as President and Chairman of the BSC Panthers Fürstenfeld. During his tenure as Fürstenfelder Chairman, he won the Austrian championship title in 2008 as well as the cup competition and the Supercup in 2009. One of the difficult times of his career as an official was the threat of license revocation due to financial arrears in summer 2014, including insolvency proceedings. At the beginning of June 2018, Sommers Panthern was refused the Bundesliga license for the 2018/19 game year in the first instance due to the lack of evidence of economic efficiency, a few weeks later the team held the right to participate subject to conditions after the submission of further documents.
