Wilhelm J. Müller (1986)

Wilhelm Johann Müller (born August 14, 1901 in Knapsack ; † July 3, 1990 in Darmstadt ) was a German civil engineer and university professor .

Life

Müller grew up in Silesia , where he graduated from high school in Löwenberg . From 1921 to 1925 he studied civil engineering at the Technical University of Berlin-Charlottenburg. The examination for Dipl.-Ing. Müller passed with a thesis on a topic posed by Professor Ludin on the expansion of a hydropower plant in a network of reservoirs . Afterwards, Müller worked as an engineer at the Ruhrverband in Essen , where he made the important acquaintance with the renowned specialist Karl Imhoff . In mid-1927 Müller moved to the city of Halle / Saale, where he worked for several years in the design and construction of sewer systems and sewage treatment plants. During this time he wrote his dissertation on the question of self-heating in rotting sewage sludge , with which he received his doctorate in 1932 under Professor Neumann in Stuttgart. In the same year, Müller took over the management of the city drainage office of the city of Halle, which he headed until 1946.

After leaving the municipal service, Müller worked as an independent consultant engineer for water supply, sewage disposal and hydraulic engineering until mid-1949. A contract with the Australian federal government took him to Sydney in July 1949 , where he worked on special issues in all areas of wastewater treatment and water pollution with the Metropolitan Water, Sewerage and Drainage Board until the end of 1954. Müller then worked at the Metropolitan Water Supply, Sewerage and Drainage Department of the Western Australian state government as a special engineer in an advisory capacity for wastewater issues in the Perth settlement area. In particular, there he created the overall plan for the local sewage treatment plant, Subiaco Sewage Treatment Works .

In 1958 Müller was appointed to the chair for water supply, sewage disposal and urban planning at the Technical University (today Technical University) Darmstadt and in 1961 appointed director of the institute of the same name. Müller performed this task until his retirement in the spring of 1970.

Together with the Darmstadt architecture professor Max Guther , Müller was involved in a larger development project in Ethiopia. The FRG represented Müller in the conference group on water pollution at the international organization OECD.

Müller had been married to Ilse T. Kirsten (medical state examination) since 1933 and had three children.
