Vechta monastery church

The monastery church of Saint Joseph is a church building on Franziskanerplatz in Vechta .

history

In 1642 the Franciscans from Rheine founded a monastery in Vechta. The monastery initially only had a small chapel . In 1727 the foundation stone was laid for the construction of a new monastery church, which was completed in 1731.

In 1812, the monastery was dissolved and evacuated by Napoleon's decree . In the following years the monastery was converted into a penal institution . The demolition of the monastery church, planned in 1816, was prevented by resistance from Catholics and Protestants ; it was converted into a simultaneous church between 1816 and 1818 . From 1885 the interior and the windows were redesigned in the neo-Gothic style.

The building was renovated from 1955 to 1957. In 1957 the west window was redesigned, in 1958 a new organ was installed on the gallery and the church was equipped with electric heating. In 1960 the baroque high altar from Amelungsborn ( Holzminden district ) was installed in the monastery church, and nine years later a pulpit from 1630 was also installed.

The state-owned church now serves, among other things, as the institutional church of the Vechta prison .

Woehl organ (2015)

The organ was built in 2015 by Gerald Woehl ( Marburg ). The instrument has 46 stops (plus several extensions and a transmission ) on two manuals and a pedal with mechanical performance and electrical stop action .
