Wilhelm Braun (librarian)

Wilhelm Braun (born January 25, 1889 in Forst (Lausitz) , † September 22, 1974 in Greifswald ) was a German librarian and historian .

Life

At City High School in Szczecin Wilhelm Braun became the in 1908 High School and then studied in Berlin and at the University of Greifswald law . After the first state examination in 1913 in Szczecin, he received his doctorate in law (Dr. jur.) On July 14, 1914 in Greifswald .

Since 1919 he has been working as an unskilled worker at the city ​​library in Szczecin , where he became the city ​​librarian in 1923 and was city library advisor and deputy to director Erwin Ackerknecht from 1928 to 1945 . After the end of the war he went to Greifswald, where in September 1945 he was employed as a research assistant at the university library . In 1946 he was entrusted with the deputy management, which he officially took over in 1947, and headed the library, the reconstruction of which he organized, until his retirement in 1955. As a retired man, he organized the special collections (manuscripts, incunabula, bequests) that were affected by the relocation during the war ) the library.

During his work as a librarian and also as a pensioner , he devoted his academic work to librarianship , the university history of Greifswald and the regional history of Pomerania . He published numerous books, brochures and essays.
