Michael Wilhelm (born April 24, 1955 in Würzburg ) is a German politician . From 2008 to December 2017 he was State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior .

Life

After graduating from high school, Wilhelm completed an apprenticeship as a banker and then worked from 1977 to 1978 for Dresdner Bank in New York . From 1978 onwards Wilhelm studied law and economics at the University of Bayreuth , and graduated in 1984 with the second state examination in law. After completing his studies, he worked for the Bavarian Finance Administration from 1984 to 1993. In 1993 he moved to the Saxon State Ministry of Finance as head of department, and from October 2003 onwards, Wilhelm was the representative of the Free State of Saxony at the federal government .

From October 1, 2008 to December 18, 2017, Wilhelm was State Secretary in the Saxon State Ministry of the Interior, where he had already been Head of Office since June 2008. He thus succeeded Andrea Fischer , who moved to the Saxon State Ministry for Social Affairs as State Secretary .

After the formation of the black and yellow state government ( Tillich II cabinet ) in September 2009 and the inauguration of Interior Minister Markus Ulbig ( CDU ), Wilhelm kept his office as State Secretary.

In April 2013, Wilhelm came under public criticism when, in the run-up to the event “Swimming for Democracy and Tolerance” planned for the end of August 2013 in Döbeln, he suggested the possible participation of NPD members with the words “Why shouldn't they swim for democracy while they don't unroll any posters? ”commented. The opposition parties SPD and Die Linke then demanded his resignation.
