Hermann Wilhelm Müller (born September 11, 1821 in Atens , † May 27, 1899 in Atens ) was a German merchant , shipping agent and local politician . He was instrumental in the later founding of the city of Nordenham .

Life

Müller was born as the fourth child of the businessman Johann Friedrich Müller (* December 23, 1784, † February 27, 1869) and the househusband's daughter Gesche Gesine nee. Harms (* February 21, 1790, † September 13, 1861) was born on Gut Schützfeld in the municipality of Atens. His father, who came from Kranenkamp near Bockhorn , bought the estate in 1812 and was temporarily the parish bailiff at Atens. Müller received his education from a private tutor and later attended the Mariengymnasium in Jever . This was followed by a commercial apprenticeship in Oldenburg .

The Friedeburg

At the age of 24 he took over the business in the “Friedeburg” restaurant from his father, which he had acquired in 1841, as well as a grocery store , a bakery and a cloth shop. In 1858 the restaurant came into his own. Müller recognized the opportunities of a harbor area on the left bank of the Weser for the cattle trade . Together with Johann Friedrich Hansing, he tried to set up an investor on the grounds of "Gut Nordenham II", which belonged to Hansing, by making submissions to the Oldenburg state government. When this failed, he began as an agent for the Robinson Line, later for the newly founded North German Lloyd , to organize the cattle trade to England via the ports of Brake and Großensiel. As an agent of the North German Lloyd, he had the ox pier built near what is now the port of North Ham . In 1864 he achieved that a pier could also be built south of the Ochsenpier . The "Unionpier", which is occasionally used by excursion boats, is located on the site of the former ox pier .

In addition to the “Friedeburg” restaurant, Müller has also been running the “Zum Grauen Ochsen” hotel on the dike near “Gut Nordenham II” since 1864 . In 1874 he sold it to the Grand Duchy of Oldenburg , and the hotel became the station building for the Brake-Nordenham railway line, which was newly established in 1875 . In 1874, Müller acquired "Gut Nordenham II" from the Hansing family and converted it into a hotel. In 1876 he opened it as the "Friesischer Hof".

In addition to his commercial activities, he acted as chairman of the Nordenham trade association and was an official and municipal council member of the rural community of Atens.

reception

Müller is considered to be the founder of the city of Nordenham, although he died eight years before the city of Nordenham was actually founded. However, it was his activities that made the rapid growth of the rural community of Atens / Nordenham possible. As early as 1900, one year after his death, a bronze statue was erected in the Bürgerpark near the "Friedeburg". In 1958 it was relocated to the newly created Friedeburg Park during the construction of the Friedeburg town hall; since 1991 it has stood in front of the town hall opposite the Kaiser Wilhelm monument.
