Wilhelm von Braun (politician)

Wilhelm von Braun (born October 1, 1790 in Thal ( Ruhla ), † February 6, 1872 in Gotha ) was a Anhalt minister .

Life

Born as the son of the forester von Ütteroda , Wilhelm von Braun graduated from high school in Gotha. He then studied accounting in Jena and Göttingen .

Financially supported by Duke August von Sachsen-Gotha , he went on a long journey through Austria , Switzerland and Italy . With this experience, especially in geognosy , he returned to Gotha and became a chamber assessor . He married on May 24, 1818.

Therefore, in the autumn of 1830, he took over the presidency of the Anhalt-Bernburg Chamber . Mining and metallurgy , forestry and agriculture were completely reorganized in the Bernburger Land. Because of his services he was made an honorary citizen of Bernburg and ennobled. In 1848 he joined the newly formed ministry as Minister of State, but did not stay there for a year. After that, he retired and devoted himself to science. He was considered a great friend and promoter of geology and mineralogy .

The manganese ore Braunit , a representative of the brown stones , was named after him.

Wilhelm von Braun was considered a close confidante of Ernst-Wilhelm Arnoldi and was one of the seven wise men in Gotha insurance history.
