Adrien Rougier

Adrien Rougier (born June 23, 1892 in Vernaison , † July 1, 1984 in Lyon ) was a French composer , teacher and organist .

life and work

Adrien Rougier and his brother Gilbert Rougier (1886–1947) were sons of the painter André Rougier. Adrien Rougier first studied piano, organ and harmony with Edouard Commette in Lyon and completed studies in composition with Jean Witkowsky. After the First World War he studied composition and conducting with Vincent d'Indy as well as organ with Louis Vierne , Abel Decaux and Maurice Sergent at the Schola Cantorum Paris. In 1922 he won the price of the Société des Grands Concerts in Lyon with the symphonic poem Les Elfes ("The Elves") .

Rougier was appointed conductor of the Concerts Symphoniques Hector Berlioz in Grenoble in 1923 and returned to Lyon in 1928. There he was titular organist at the churches of Saint-Irénée , Saint-Polycarpe and Saint Pothin and from 1966 professor of organ at the Conservatory as the successor to Marcel Paponaud (1893–1988).

Adrien Rougier describes the aid he invented for the organs Acribès in his work Initiation à la facture d'orgue , which enjoyed some popularity in France and western Switzerland.
