Genesius of Rome († 286 or around 305) was a Christian martyr . His feast day is August 25th . Genesius is considered to be the patron saint of actors, stage artists, musicians, dancers and minstrels. In art he is represented as a youth with a stringed instrument , masks and baptismal font .

Legend

The dated the 6th century Passio S. Genesii reported Genesius, actor at the court of for its persecution of Christians known Roman Emperor Diocletian (Emperor 284-305), have repeatedly mocked the Christians in his performances. During such a comedy, in mock fear of death, he asked for baptism , but suddenly recognized Christ and accepted the mock baptism as real. He had given a conversion sermon to the emperor and the public and was then beheaded.

Patronage

In the 8th century the French abbey of Saint-Génis-des-Fontaines was named after him and in the 9th century the monasteryienen on Lake Constance (now part of Öhningen ). One of the churches with Genesius patronage is the parish church of Jenesien in South Tyrol ; a chapel dedicated to Genesius could have existed in the same place as early as around 500 AD; The place name Jenesien can also be traced back to Genesius.
