On air design

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

With on-air design (often on-air design , short OAD ) is the visual appearance of a TV channel or a broadcast called, similar to the corporate design of a company. If the viewer zaps through the channels, he should recognize within a fraction of a second which television program is being seen on the screen.

Appearance of a program

The general appearance of a program usually includes the logo / signet , a distinctive color scheme, as well as the typography and the arrangement of the individual design elements on the screen. A special processing of the audio and video signal is another possibility to make a television transmitter clearly identifiable. Appearances are developed for both a television station and television broadcasts. When designing a television broadcast, both the appearance of the broadcaster and the broadcast in question must be taken into account.

Self-promotion by a broadcaster

The self-promotion of a station is also called on air promotion. Certain programs are pointed out by means of short film or animation sequences. These can be trailers or teasers .

In the past, program notes consisted of simple display boards with text. Due to the need to win viewers for the broadcaster or to bind them permanently to the broadcaster in order to achieve the highest possible audience rating, program notices are now produced very laboriously. On air design is often assigned to post-production , although it is not a matter of post-processing, but rather of specially produced elements. In addition to film excerpts from the program to be announced, elements from the visual effects area (2D, 3D animations, compositing) are combined with typographic elements, which is again known as motion design .

Other areas of application

Elements and techniques of on-air design are increasingly being used in a wide variety of productions. In advertising films, the appearance of the brand is implemented using graphic and typographical means. For non-fiction productions (news programs, reports, scientific programs, etc.), complex relationships are visualized using the means of on-air design. The simplest form of on-air design is a font generator for displaying information in text form.
