International Surfing Association

The International Surfing Association (ISA) is a sports association based in San Diego. It has been officially recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as the governing body responsible for the administration of surfing worldwide . It emerged in 1976 from the International Surfing Federation (ISF), which had been responsible for organizing the annual world championships since 1964.

The association is a non-profit organization that is committed to the development of the sport, sets criteria for teaching the sport in surf schools and for the evaluation of competitions and deals with topics such as anti-doping in surfing. She is also responsible for organizing the World Surfing Games (formerly World Championships). Junior World Championships have been held since 1980 and Masters World Championships since 2007. In 2011, the ISA hosted the first world championship in the Stand Up Paddling (SUP) category .

Its membership includes 104 official national surfing associations based on six continents. Its headquarters are in San Diego , California . The office of president is currently occupied by Fernando Aguerre from Argentina , who was first elected president in 1994 and has since been confirmed in office several times. The four vice presidents are Karín Sierralta (Peru), Barbara Kendall (New Zealand), Casper Steinfath (Denmark) and Kirsty Coventry (Zimbabwe).
