Fernando Aguerre

Fernando Aguerre (* 1957 in Mar del Plata , Argentina ) is an Argentinian entrepreneur, surfer and surfing official . He is the acting president of the ISA . He is also a pioneer of surfing in Argentina and has long been one of the leading surf entrepreneurs worldwide.

Life

Fernando Aguerre comes from a middle-class background. His father was a lawyer and owned a large ranch , and his mother was also a lawyer and psychologist. At the age of twelve, his brother's interest in surfing was aroused. His first, small business was a workshop in Mar del Plata, where surfing equipment and boards were repaired. In 1977 there was a military coup in Argentina and the military banned surfing because it was considered American and liberal. Aguerre stood up for various functionaries as the official representative of the surfing industry in Argentina, whereupon this order was lifted a few months later. This opened a brisk surf boom in Argentina. For many young surfers in Argentina, Aguerre was henceforth a hero and it helped everyone to escape from the gloomy everyday life of the dictatorship into the world of waves. During this time he also founded the first surf magazine in Argentina and, during the dictatorship, the Argentinean surf association.

Between 1978 and 1984 Aguerre studied law , which he completed in 1984 with a legal exam. In 1984 he went to California , where he invented and developed surf sandals together with his brother and founded the company "Reef", the first worldwide outfitter for surf clothing, sandals and sometimes boards. He was the company's CEO until 2003, and in 2005 he and his brother sold the company to another company. He was also a board member of SIMA (Surf Industry Manufactures Association), the world association of surf outfitters.

Aguerre has been President of the International Surfing Association (ISA) since 1994. During his term of office, the restructuring to an international association with branches in more than 55 countries as well as the integration into the IOC took place . During his tenure, the deaths of several important top surfers, such as the South African top surfers David Lilienfeld and the American top surfers Jay Moriarity and Andy Irons . In 1992 he co-founded the PASA (Panamerican Surfing Association).

Fernando Aguerre is still considered a pioneer of surfing in Argentina and Latin America. He is also often named as one of the most important surfing entrepreneurs worldwide and is considered an important figure in the history of surfing.

He lives in La Jolla , California with his wife and triplets . To this day he surfs regularly in his adopted home California. He is fluent in Spanish, English and Portuguese.
