David Lilienfeld

David Lilienfeld (born July 20, 1991 in South Africa , † April 19, 2012 in Koeël Bay near Gordon's Bay , South Africa) was a South African surfer and bodyboarder who was the victim of a shark attack.

Life

David Lilienfeld was a member of the South African national surf team . As a teenager he had already participated in numerous surfing competitions in South Africa; In 2008 he won the Science / Reef South African Champs competition in junior class. He has been called the best bodyboard surfer in South Africa.

Lilienfeld, 20 years old at the time, his younger brother and some friends had gone to Koeël Bay (around 50 kilometers from Cape Town ) to surf there. A great white shark about four meters long attacked Lilienfeld and tore off his right leg; he lost a lot of blood and died on the spot.

Lilienfeld's death caused horror in South Africa and the surfing scene around the world. The President of the International Surfing Association (ISA), Fernando Aguerre , expressed his condolences to the family and suggested a minute's silence at an international tournament. His ashes were scattered in three places, including where he loved to surf.

The memorial for David Lilienfeld includes a small memorial stone on Koeël Bay, where he died. It says "David Lilienfeld, 1991–2012," Warrior ". While Bodyboarding here on April 19, 2012 ".

Since 2015 there has been a surfing competition named after Lilienfeld in South Africa, the David Lilienfeld Trials as part of the Tand Invintational Tour .
