Jay Moriarity

Jay Moriarity (born June 16, 1978 in Georgia , † June 15, 2001 off the coast of Kaafu , Maldives ) was a surfer from Santa Cruz (California) .

Moriarity was best known for surfing in Mavericks ( Half Moon Bay , California ). In 1994, immediately after paddling, a strong wind hit his board and he fell four floors. A photo that shows him with his arms outstretched went around the world as the cover of US American "Surfer" magazine.

He drowned freediving in the Maldives the day before his 23rd birthday, leaving behind his wife Kim.

His biography was the basis of the feature film Mavericks - Live Your Dream , which was directed by the directors Curtis Hanson and Michael Apted in 2012. Actor Jonny Weston took on the role of Moriarity .
