A sports field is a large, flat and open area on which one can practice sports , also for the purpose of holding competitions . Sports fields are the most common type of sports grounds .

definition

In Germany according to DIN 18035-1 (sports fields, part 1: outdoor facilities for games and athletics, planning and dimensions), a sports field is:

"... an outdoor facility that serves both organized competitive sports according to the nationally and internationally agreed rules of the sports associations and non-competition-oriented, rule-open sports, exercise and leisure activities."

The sports field differs from the stadium in that it does not have a grandstand. A pure soccer field without a grandstand and special equipment is also known as a soccer field .

Furnishing

The typical structure of a sports field is determined by a rectangular small or large playing field provided with natural grass in a central position, around which a track for athletics disciplines is laid out. The running track is usually 400 meters long, is straight along the longer sides of the field and circles the shorter sides on half a circular path. There are markings for different distances. The classic addition of throwing and jumping facilities is still common. They are combined with the career in so-called arenas .

The laying of artificial turf can reduce the maintenance effort of the lawns and ensures better resilience and playability in bad weather conditions . As a result, playing conditions for some sports such as hockey or particularly stressed areas such as the teeing areas at swing golf courses are improved . Another alternative to natural grass is a tennis court , i.e. a surface made of other, mostly granular materials such as slag / pebble red (containing dioxin). This variant also offers advantages such as lower maintenance requirements as well as greater resilience and better playability in bad weather.

In addition, sports fields with natural or artificial turf can be equipped with underfloor heating to enable training and play under good conditions even in winter.

Communal aspects

The number and size, type and equipment of the sports field requirements are based on the needs of user groups such as sports clubs , schools , recreational athletes and / or the disabled or senior citizens. The concrete object planning in a municipality should be preceded by a sports facility development plan. Sports fields and open spaces in sports facilities are planned by landscape architects .
