Union Internationale Motonautique
The Union Internationale Motonautique ( UIM ) is the world umbrella organization for motorized water sports, comparable to the FIA in the automotive sector and the FIM in the motorcycle sector . It currently comprises 52 national associations (as of 2008). In the German-speaking area these are:
- DMYV (German Motor Yacht Association) based in Duisburg
- Motorboat sports association for Austria based in Vienna
- Fédération Suisse Motonautique based in Ses now bisa
The UIM is recognized by the IOC and a member of ARISF and Sportaccord .
The following five disciplines are supervised by the UIM:
- Circuit races ( English circuit )
- Offshore race (Engl. Offshore )
- Jet boat (English aqua bike )
- Model boats ( radio-controlled )
- Water tourism ( pleasure navigation )
The UIM creates regulations for all disciplines that are binding worldwide. These are revised annually and only published in English. The UIM keeps the calendar with all international racing events and publishes the results. It also awards world and continental championship titles with the corresponding medals.
history
The first motorboat races were held at the beginning of the 20th century . As a result, clubs and national associations were formed to regulate the competitions. In 1907 the national associations founded the international umbrella organization Internationale Motor Yacht Association based in Paris . A year later it was renamed the Association Internationale du Yachting Automobile (small motorized boats were called " car boats" at the time). As early as 1915 there were efforts by the American side to found a new international racing association, because the AIYA is only "... by and large limited to the annual event in Monaco" and the regulations are somewhat out of date. The war did not lead to a new establishment. The AIYA disbanded in 1918, when the last president, Busley from Berlin, left the association and took all important documents with him.
In 1922 the Briton Morton Smart and the Irishman John Ward, who lives in Belgium, pushed for the establishment of the global umbrella organization under the name Union Internationale du Yachting Automobile (UIYA). The founding meeting took place from 27.-29. September 1922 in Brussels . In 1952 the name was changed to the Union Internationale Motonautique, which is still in force today . The association is based in Monaco .

organization
The President of the UIM is the Italian Raffaele Chiulli. He was elected at the general meeting on November 11, 2007 after the previous President Ralf Fröhling from Bergisch Gladbach resigned on January 10, 2007 for health reasons. The Swiss Thomas Kurth has been Secretary General since 2014.
