geography

The very old village stands on a small hill above the beautiful meadow plan called Prati Vergani. Sessa is located 5 km northwest of Ponte Tresa TI and 2 km northeast of Cremenaga .

history

Emperor Friedrich II. (HRR) mentioned the castle of Sessa in 1240, which was probably in the center of the village. The village is first mentioned as Sexa in 1244. Roman coins were found there and in 1929 old graves from an unknown time in the village of Bonzaglio. The community is mentioned in 1335; but in the Middle Ages there was a nobility corporation of capitanei in addition to the vicinìa ( neighborhood ) . It is not known where the Sessa Castle stood, perhaps in the south-western part of the village, where important buildings with Romanesque capitals can still be seen.

In 1240 the castle was owned by the capitanei de Sessa as an imperial fief, a noble family mentioned as early as the 13th century. It formed the numerous corporation of the capitanei or nobles of Sessa, which had its own organization and a patronage chapel in the early church of San Martino and was associated with the capitanei of Locarno in the 15th century. In 1508 the corporation still had about ten families. In the first half of the 15th century the village had to provide 29 soldiers for the Duke of Milan. A school is mentioned in 1599.
