Holy Angel (Peine)
Hl. Engel or To the holy angels is the patronage of the Catholic parish church of Peine (Von-Ketteler-Platz 1). Her parish of the same name belongs to the dean's office in Braunschweig in the Diocese of Hildesheim , and today it also includes the Catholic churches in Dungelbeck , Edemissen , Hämelerwald , Telgte and Vöhrum .
history
Due to changing power relations in the age of denominationalization , Peine had been a Lutheran city since the Reformation with traces of episcopal-Hildesheim recatholic efforts . One of these was the Capuchin monastery on the grounds of Peine Castle , which existed from 1669 to 1829 and offered pastoral care and worship to the town's residents. Until his death in 1832, the last superior of the monastery took over pastoral care in Peine, from 1833 diocesan priests took over the work in the parish of Peine, which was newly established in 1830.
A larger number of Catholics only came to Peine with the migration movements in the course of industrialization towards the middle of the 19th century. A representative neo-Gothic parish church was built on the site of the old monastery church that was sold for demolition . Its foundation stone was laid on May 15, 1866, and its consecration on March 25, 1868 by Bishop Eduard Jakob Wedekin .
On November 1, 2006, the Peine deanery was dissolved and its parishes have belonged to the Braunschweig deanery since then. At this time, the churches in Dungelbeck, Edemissen, Hämelerwald and Vöhrum were added to the parish of Hl. Engel .
architecture
Conrad Wilhelm Hase designed the building, which is almost 66 meters above sea level , as a hall church with a mighty tower and octagonal choir based on models from North German brick Gothic . Above the portal with the inscription Ecce tabernaculum Dei cum hominibus (“See, the tent of God with the people”) there is a relief of the Archangel Michael (renewed after the war in the style of the 1950s).
Furnishing
The interior impression of the church, which has over 280 seats, is determined by some neo-Gothic furnishings (benches and confessionals) and the windows, which are rich in colors and figures. The interior was completely renovated between the beginning of 2009 and September 2010, whereby emphasis was placed on stylistic uniformity. The altar in the apse was re-roofed, the high altar removed and a new celebration altar erected, which was consecrated on September 25, 2010 by Bishop Norbert Trelle . The valuable triumphal cross (from the 13th century), which previously stood in the apse apse above the high altar, was hung above the new altar . Under the organ gallery, two large statues show Saints Anthony of Padua and Francis of Assisi , two small statues show Bernward and Godehard .

In addition to the interior renovation, an English-romantic organ by the organ builder Albert Keates , Sheffield , was installed in 2009/2010 to replace a Hillebrand organ from the 1950s . It thus represents a special feature in the organ landscape of the region. As part of the restoration work by Orgelbau Hüfken Halberstadt, the wind chests, wind supply and parts of the pipework were repaired. A 16 'trombone was added to the pedal to accommodate the spatial conditions. The installation of an additional Tuba 8 'manual register is planned, but the implementation period is still uncertain. The slider chests -instrument from 1908 has 32 registers on three manuals and pedal . The manual and stop actions are pneumatic, with the exception of the manual stops .

Sacred Heart Chapel
In 1920 the Caritas Association acquired a large residential building in Peiner Südstadt (Braunschweiger Straße 56) which also housed an inn. A chapel was set up on the ground floor of the house and belonged to the parish of St. Angel . On January 8, 1923, their benediction took place on behalf of the Bishop of Hildesheim by the pastor Heinrich Leupke . On February 15, 1925, a Sacred Heart statue was placed in the chapel, and the chapel was given the Sacred Heart of Jesus patronage . The chapel was rebuilt and enlarged as early as 1930. In the 1970s, the chapel received the tabernacle, crucifix and the Way of the Cross from Telgter St. Barbara Church.
In December 2006 the chapel was profaned . Since May 2007 the room has been used by the Evangelical Lutheran church district of Peine; he runs the Peiner Tafel there , a food outlet for the needy.
