history

In the 16th century the population in the region around Lehrte became Evangelical-Lutheran through the introduction of the Reformation , in the areas south of the Hämeler Forest , which belonged to Hildesheim Abbey , in the 17th century.

In 1843 the section of the Hanover – Braunschweig railway line built between Lehrte and Peine was opened. As a result, some residential buildings for railway employees were built near the Hämeler Forest , from which the present-day village of Hämelerwald emerged from 1864.

As a result of the Second World War , the number of Catholics in the Hämelerwald area increased due to the influx of refugees and displaced persons from the eastern regions of the German Empire . Initially, the emergency chapel, inaugurated in 1948 in Vöhrum, about seven kilometers away, was the closest Catholic church, but in the 1950s Catholic services were also held in the old school in Hämelerwald.

In 1961 the foundation stone was laid for the church, followed on 22 December 1962 Bishop Heinrich Maria Janssen her blessing . In 1969 the altar was changed according to the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council , in 1974 the church got a bell . During the renovation in 1996 which is confessional given way to a confessional.

Since November 1st, 2006 the church belongs to the parish "To the holy angels" in Peine. The parish " St. Josef " in Vöhrum, to which the church in Hämelerwald had previously belonged, was abolished at this time. The church has also been part of the Braunschweig deanery since November 1st, 2006. Before that she belonged to the Deanery Peine, which was also dissolved at that time.
