After Arminia was relegated to the 2nd Bundesliga after the 2008/09 season, a rivalry with SC Paderborn 07 developed in the following seasons. Arminia played for the first time together with Paderborn in a professional league, having previously only been in the amateur camp encountered. The rivalry is based on the physical proximity of the two East Westphalian cities and the fact that the opponents were the only professional football clubs in the region up to and including the 2019/20 season. The public interest was increased by a media hype triggered by the local daily newspapers and radio stations.
Critical voices from Bielefeld say, however, that for historical reasons there would be no rivalry between the two clubs and that Prussia Munster is more of Arminia's main rival. Before the game on November 30, 2018, Arminia's sports director Samir Arabi admitted that the geographical proximity is a certain explosive factor. The German Football Association described the game between Bielefeld and Paderborn as a "derby without tradition". There were at least 53 competitive games in the championship and cup, of which four results are unknown. The Bielefeld team won 37 games, while the Paderborn team could only win five times. Eleven games ended in a draw.
For the first time, both clubs met in the 1920/21 season in the first-class Westphalian district league east. Arminia won both games against VfJ 08 Paderborn 2-0. Six years later, Arminia scored their highest victory with a 12-0 win at VfJ 08 Paderborn. Paderborn's first victory came in the 1931/32 season, when VfJ won 3-2 in Bielefeld. The first duel in the professional camp was won by the Bielefeld team on October 24, 2009 with a 2-0 away win. The highest victory for Paderborn in the professional camp came on February 16, 2014, when the SCP won 4-0 and rose to the Bundesliga at the end of the season .
