Georgi Dimitrov Donkow (also spelled Georgi Dimitrov Donkov , Bulgarian Георги Димитров Донков , born June 2, 1970 in Sofia ) is a German football coach and former player with Bulgarian roots.
Player career

Donkow started his professional career at the age of 17 with Levski Sofia . With this club he was three times national champion and four times cup winner. From 1993 to 1995 he played for Botew Plovdiv , where he reached 3rd place in two seasons in the highest Bulgarian league. In 1995 Donkow moved to CSKA Sofia . After the European Championship in 1996 he received offers from 1. FC Köln and VfL Bochum . He finally moved to VfL Bochum under coach Klaus Toppmöller for 1.5 million DM . There he established himself as a regular player and goalscorer. During this time, VfL achieved its best placement to date with 5th place in the Bundesliga . In the UEFA Cup , the club reached the round of 16. The striker also showed his scoring quality here (two goals against Club Bruges ). In 1998, coach Bernd Schuster brought the Bulgarian international to 1. FC Köln. In his second year, under coach Ewald Lienen, 1. FC Köln managed to return to the Bundesliga, to which Donkow contributed six goals.
In May 2002 Donkow played the play-offs in the Swiss league with Neuchâtel Xamax . From 2002 to 2003 he was active in Cyprus with Enosis Neon Paralimni . In the summer of 2003, Donkow moved to the regional league team SC Paderborn 07 at the age of 33 , where his compatriot Pawel Dotschew worked as a trainer. In the second year Donkow was promoted to the 2nd Bundesliga with Paderborn .
In 2005 he received an offer from his former football colleague Maurizio Gaudino to move to SV Waldhof Mannheim . Despite his 19 goals in 34 games, the club failed to rise. In 2007 the striker moved to FSV Oggersheim ; the club was relegated from the Regionalliga Süd.
Because of a serious injury Donkow ended his career as a professional footballer at the age of 38.
National team
Donkow played for all youth national teams and was called up in 1993 for the first time in the senior national team of Bulgaria . He took part with her in the qualifying games for the 1994 and 1998 World Championships and also played at the 1996 European Championships . At that time, Christo Stoitschkow , Borislaw Michajlow , Emil Kostadinow , Jordan Letschkow , Krassimir Balakow , Petar Hubchew , Daniel Borimirow and Lyuboslaw Penew were among his teammates.
Coaching career
In February 2009 Donkow acquired the Trainer B license. In the summer of 2009, he trained as an A-license trainer at the Hennef sports school . In the summer of 2012 he acquired the football instructor license.
For the 2010/2011 season Donkow was assistant coach at Wacker Burghausen in the 3rd division, where he worked alongside Mario Basler from August 2010 . On May 14, 2011 Donkov was temporarily promoted to head coach after Wacker's relegation to the regional league. For the 2011/12 season he took over the position of assistant coach again, now under the new head coach Rudi Bommer . After Bommer moved to FC Energie Cottbus at the turn of the year , Donkov worked as an assistant coach at Reinhard Stumpf's side . On May 7, 2012 Donkow was again head coach of the club. The first season under Donkov finished the SV Wacker in 8th place in the table (tied with seventh in the table). However, Donkov was released on September 5, 2013.
In 2014, Donkov and Dietmar Hirsch supervised the VDV training camp .
From 2015 to 2016 he was coach of the Oberliga side SSV Reutlingen 05 .
From October 2016 to May 2019 Donkov worked as an assistant coach for the Bulgarian national team. In June 2019 Donkov moved to the Bulgarian first division club PFC Levski Sofia as assistant coach at Peter Hubchev's side.
