Borislav Michajlow ( Bulgarian Борислав Михайлов , English transcription Borislav Mikhailov; born February 12, 1963 in Sofia ) is a former Bulgarian football player . He was a goalkeeper , participated in two world championships and was Bulgaria's record player until 2011 .

Player career

Michajlow was born in Sofia and began his professional career in 1981 with his hometown club Levski Sofia . He played for his hometown club until the age of 27. With Levski he was Bulgarian champion and cup winner three times. In 1983 he made his debut in the Bulgarian national team , with which he was represented at the 1986 World Cup .

In 1989 he moved to Portugal to Belenenses Lisbon . From 1991 he played for FC Mulhouse in France, in 1994 he moved back to his home country and joined Botew Plovdiv . In the same year, Bulgaria surprisingly reached fourth place at the World Cup in the USA , with Michajlow in goal in all seven games.

After only one year at Botew, he moved to England in 1995 to the then second-rate Reading FC , but the club did not achieve the desired promotion to the Premier League, even with the star Michajlow. After two years, he left Reading and ended his career with Slavia Sofia and FC Zurich .

After he had not played his for the national team since 1996, he played an international match on June 5, 1998, which Bulgaria won 2-0 against Algeria in Mikhailov's hometown Sofia. He was also at the World Cup in the same year in the Bulgarian squad, but remained without use.

Further career

After the end of his active career, he started a career as a football official. From 2001 to 2005 he was vice-president of the Bulgarian Football Association , until his resignation in October 2019, he succeeded Ivan Slavkov as its president.

In March 2011, Mikhailov was elected to the UEFA Executive Committee .

Others

Michajlow has been married to the former successful Bulgarian rhythm gymnast Marija Petrowa since 1998 .

His son Nikolaj Michajlow (* 1988) is also a soccer player and current Bulgarian national goalkeeper.

It is unusual that he wore a toupee between the posts when he was a Bulgarian national goalkeeper .
